University of Mississippi School of Law Hurricane Response Manual: Employment Law
Assistance may be available to persons who become unemployed as a result of a disaster through disaster unemployment assistance (DUA) and/or state unemployment insurance (UI). An affected individual must use state unemployment benefits before being eligible for disaster benefits, although he or she may apply for both at the same time. DUA, also referred to as Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance, is a federal program that provides temporary financial assistance to individuals unemployed as result of a major disaster declared by the President. Applications may be made through telephone, but must be filed no later than November 30, 2005.

U.S. Department of Labor
The Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) program provides unemployment benefits to individuals who have become unemployed as a result of a Presidentially declared major disaster.

U.S. Department of Labor Extends Disaster Unemployment Assistance Eligibility
The U.S. Department of Labor on September 29 extended through November 30 the time allowed for persons rendered jobless by Hurricane Rita to file for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA). The department also lengthened to 90 days the paperwork requirements needed to support an initial DUA application.

Florida Unemployment Insurance Information
The Agency for Workforce Innovation provides information and online applications for unemployment compensation and benefits in both Spanish and English, as well as other Disaster Unemployment Assistance(DUA) information.

Louisiana Unemployment Insurance Information
If a person is unemployed because of the hurricane under certain circumstances they may be entitled to receive unemployment compensation benefits.

Mississippi Unemployment Insurance Information
Hurricane Katrina Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) is now available in 47 Mississippi counties. Claims for DUA may be filed by calling 1-888-844-3577 toll-free or visiting any open Mississippi WIN Job Center

Alabama Unemployment Insurance Information
The Alabama Department of Industrial Relations is offering Hurricane Katrina refugees from Mississippi and Louisiana use of the state's unemployment assistance call center. Evacuees from Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama can call 1-888-234-5382 to file a regular unemployment compensation claim against wages from their respective states. Alabama will send the information back to the state of origin as soon as communications networks are back online.
